Faunal Survey 2012

Alex and Jess have set up the pitfall traps again this year and have been trapping since the start of the term (8 October). Sadly, they have caught very little. The tally so far:
1 female Pobblebonk - swollen with eggs
1 male European mouse
1 Weasel Skink
lots of insects - spiders, worms, ants, beetles (including an impressive Scarab beetle), millipedes.

The weather has been very unsettled and has vacililated from very cold to warm and humid with little rain during this period.

We, Callum, Alex and I, conducted the first night walk on Tuesday 23 October. We took recordings at regular intervals along the watercourse using an old tape recorder with a good unidirectional microphone and an iPad. The old tape recordings are much clearer due to the improved microphone, but the iPad inbuilt microphone struggles to pick up a lot of sound.

If I can work out how to get the sound recordings off the iPad and if they aren't too large I will upload them to this wiki.

We have identified six frog species from the tapes so far:
Southern Brown Tree Frog
Verreaux's Tree Frog
Eastern Common Froglet
Southern Toadlet
Spotted Marsh Frog
Striped Marsh Frog
Pobblebonk.

We also saw Bettongs, Kangaroos and Pademelons in the reserve and a family of Ringtail Possums, a group of three Sugar Gliders and lots of microbats along the watercourse outside the reserve.
